National Enterprise Corporation (NEC) handed over the rehabilitated Lumumba Hall to Vice Chancellor Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe on Friday, July 26th, 2024 at a handover ceremony held at Lumumba hall.


The site was handed back to Prof. Nawangwe by Eng. Richard Mutebi, the quantity surveyor at NEC. VC then handed over the rehabilitated hall to the dean of students Mrs. Winfred Kabumbuli and subsequently to the warden Ms. Norah Nalubowa.


VC Nawangwe urged the warden to ensure students keep the hall clean so that the president, who will officially open it, finds it in good shape. He also noted that their is need to increase the budget for structure maintenance if the renovated halls are to be well maintained.


He said; "we (Makerere) must be very thankful to the government for providing all the resources to renovate this hall. This hall now looks like it has just been built and that points to the wonderful work done by NEC".


The university secretary Yusuf Kiranda noted that Makerere has contributed to national development by using a local company (NEC) for the renovation works. He also thanked the government for availing all the resources to facilitate the rehabilitation of halls, adding that NEC had already received the biggest percentage of funds required to rehabilitate Marystuart Hall.

On behalf of the students body, the guild president Lubega Nsamba Vincent thanked management and government for embarking on the renovation of halls of residences within the university. 


"I am one who appreciates the contribution the government has done to provide us with the resources to see us having thus beautiful and magnificent edifice of a new Lumumba Hall. This is a disability friendly facility that speaks or clearly aligns with the broader commitment of the institution to inclusivity and diversity," Nsamba said.


The rehabilitated Lumumba Hall will be occupied by residents of Marystuart Hall as renovation works on the latter take place.


The handover ceremony was witnessed by the director of estates Eng. Okok Geoffrey, Ms. Norah Nalubowa warden Marystuart Hall, the dean of students Mrs. Winfred Kabumbuli, guild president Lubega Nsamba and his deputy Sserunjogi Joy among other dignitaries
