Makerere University led by Nkrumah hall paid tribute to Pan-Africanist Kwame Nkrumah on September 21, 2024 at the Nkrumah Day and memorial lecture.
The event held at Makerere Yusuf Lule teaching facility was attended by prime minister emeritus Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda.
Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda said he is proud to have been among those that passed the resolution to name Nkrumah hall after Kwame Nkrumah.
“So, the students at New Hall convened in the Senior Common Room and passed a resolution to give New Hall a name that honored its significance. The name selected was Nkrumah. This resolution was passed overwhelmingly, and I am proud to have been part of that decision. The name Nkrumah was then forwarded to the warden and the university administration, who accepted it. That is how the name came about. I am also glad to see that there is an appropriate statue in front of the hall, commemorating an iconic figure in Africa’s history,” Dr. Ruhakana said.
Nkrumah Hall was formed after the split of Northcote hall into two. The other hall being Nsibirwa Hall. Despite the split, the residents of the two halls still uphold the Northcote solidarity.
